Watch Metallica Songs Performed With Guitar and Bass Parts Switched

There are a lot of reasons Metallica has become the most successful heavy metal band of all-time.

One reason that's made particularly obvious by the above video from YouTuber Andriy Vasylenko is that the band never slacked off when it came to arranging its music.

Guitars are a huge part of the sound of any rock band, but what happens when you switch the bass guitar and the lead guitar parts?

In his video with guitarist Denis Pauna, Vasylenko expertly demonstrates how Metallica's music holds up despite a flip-flopped arrangement.

The pair runs through 17 (!) Metallica songs, spanning the band's 30-plus-year career, switching the lead and bass guitar parts just to see what it sounds like. In all but a few cases, the songs still sound really good!

By watching guitarist Pauna, we get a real sense of the sophisticated writing of '80s and '90s-era Metallica bassists Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted

One of the highlights of the video is when Pauna takes on Burton's bass solo in "Orion." We get to hear the iconic part spun around, as played by a guitarist.

Another interesting spot is Vasylenko's take on the intro of "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)." That part looks extraordinarily difficult to play on a bass, yet the tune is still instantly recognizable and loses little in terms of dynamics.

The video was apparently inspired by YouTuber Danilo Vicari's recent version of Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child O' Mine" with the bass and lead guitar parts switched.

Metallica is coming off a wildly successful North American tour, and getting set to take its show back to Europe later this month.

The band will return to the U.S. for a tour beginning in September. Get all the dates and info here
